Margaret was born in Toronto, 6th August 1923, the eldest daughter of Ernest Leonard, of Plymouth, Devon and Rose (West) Leonard, of Plumpton, Sussex and dear sister of Raymond, Olive and Mary Leonard. From the earliest age, she enjoyed music and dance and aspired to one day become a dancer. She attended Central Commerce secondary school where she acquired business skills but when war came in 1939, at the age of 16, she went to work at Tip-Top tailors where she helped to make uniforms for the servicemen.
At the end of the war, she married and became the mother of four boys. The family lived in and moved from Smith's Falls, Toronto, Hampton, New Hampshire and Richmond Hill. A grandmother and great-grandmother, Margaret retired in Windermere, Muskoka, with eldest son Roy and family. On Monday, 5th September 2016, She passed away peacefully in her residence at The Pines in Bracebridge.
Margaret, like her father, was athletic and strong. She enjoyed the sports of curling and golf and always to dance. A dutiful wife and mother, she was a dedicated homemaker and superb cook. She was always faithful to the Church where she at times served in the choir and altar guild. As a volunteer, Margaret belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in the United States and with the Auxiliary of the newly-built York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill. When her family had grown, she chose to work, first in an upmarket women's fashion store and then after successfully completing a diploma in secretarial skills at Seneca College, was employed by the Ontario Teachers Superannuation Commission in Toronto.
Margaret loved to travel whenever the opportunity came and she especially enjoyed visiting with family in England with whom she remained close.. Utterly devoted to her family, they remained the most important to her all through her long life.
She leaves behind with love her dear sons and their families, Roy and Mary of Windermere, Gregory and Debby of Colborne, John and Janet of Owen Sound, Thomas and Line of Ottawa; her sister Mary of Washago; her many adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loving nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and England.
Margaret will be buried with her mother and father in Pine Hills Cemetery, Scarborough, at a later date following cremation.
